Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

How does coaching differ from therapy?

Therapy is very much focused on the past of an individual. It seeks to understand a person’s past experiences and traumas (big or small) to arrive at a diagnosis. Coaching, on the other hand, focuses on the present and future. It helps clients move forward, no matter what happened in their past. Its focus is on the obstacles (mental or physical) that are keeping clients from living their best lives. It does so without trying to understand where these come from. In addition, while therapists sometimes give advice and suggestions to help their clients feel better, a coach never does.

How do I know if coaching is right for me?

If you find yourself emotionally stuck (in the past) and unable to “function”, then therapy is probably more suitable. It is equally more suitable if your goal is to know “why” you believe in the things you do. However, coaching is more useful if you want to work on patterns, if you are looking to get past some of your limiting beliefs, fears, or doubts. In most cases, coaching is what you need if you would like to get to know yourself on a deeper level and upgrade your life.

How long does it take to see results?

Everything depends on the “results” you are looking for. In other words, what are looking to get out of coaching? Sometimes, one session is enough to achieve your goal, shift your perspective, or figure out the solution to a problem. Other times you may need more sessions over a period of time to get to where you want to be.

Can coaching be done virtually or in-person?

I offer coaching sessions mainly online, through Zoom. But if we live in the same place and you would like to have in-person coaching sessions because you think you could benefit more, I am happy to do that.

What should I expect during a session?

At the beginning of every session I will partner with you to set a coaching agreement. That is, I will ask you what you would like to get out of the session. Based on your answer, I will let you take the lead and guide me through your goal. My role is to support you and ask you awareness-evoking questions. By the end of a session, I will make sure to discuss your learnings, acknowledge your progress, and help you define some tangible steps that keep you accountable and in action.

What does a coach provide in a coaching session?

Support and accountability – the coach helps you find the answers you seek within yourself and supports you towards lasting change
Courage and confidence – the coach helps you trust yourself and the process of change, always looking to the future rather than the past
Clarity – by asking the right questions, the coach can help you clarify ideas and goals, so that they can mature and be achieved
An action plan – by focusing on a goal and transforming it into something concrete and measurable, the coach helps you recognise what values lie behind it so that you know what to do next
A challenge – on a mental and emotional level, the coach challenges you to look within yourself and see what obstacles are between you and your goal, pushing you beyond your limits and into uncharted territories with confidence
A safe space – the coach gives you a safe space where you can express yourself fully without feeling judged or misunderstood
Mirroring – the coach often acts as a mirror, allowing you to notice certain aspects of yourself that you were not aware of before
Recognition – the coach will acknowledge your progress and growth every step of the way
